You may already be familiar with the concept of baked brie. This typical soft French cheese is a huge fan favorite, and its creamy flavor only improves when you whack it in the oven and add some toppings. It’s perfectly gooey, dippable and a fantastic vessel for all sorts of tasty toppings.
For an appetizer that looks and tastes just as lush as normal baked brie, but without having to sit around to wait for the oven to warm up, there’s air fryer baked brie. Since I got my air fryer, I haven’t gone back to using my oven. It takes less heating and baking time than the oven and it’s very easy to use.
Ingredients & substitutions
This easy appetizer consists only of a few ingredients. It’s super customizable, so it’s up to you whether you want to keep it simple or serve your air fryer baked brie with some fancy extras.
Brie
You can use any type of brie, although it’s probably best to skip the more expensive ones. Baking it in your air fryer is actually the perfect way to spruce up some cheaper brie! No need to remove the rind.
I buy mine at a local cheese store. Most supermarkets sell brie triangles, but I personally prefer an oval or wheel-shaped cheese. It fits the air fryer better, plus the shape is just a bit easier to manage.
Oil
Adding oil can help prevent the brie from drying out while baking. You can use your favorite cooking oil; I prefer olive oil because of its soft flavor, which goes perfectly with this French cheese.
Honey
Of course, you can serve air fryer baked brie as-is, no frills needed! However, to really make this cheese shine, take your pick from the dozens of perfect brie accompaniments. You can go sweet or savory – or both.
For this recipe, we’ll be using honey. You don’t have to add a lot, one tablespoon is more than enough.
Other great options include:
- Baked brie with apricot jam
- Baked brie with cranberry sauce
- Baked brie with fresh figs
- Baked brie with baked apples
Nuts and seeds
We’ll be using fresh pomegranate seeds as a topping for our air fryer baked brie. It’s just the right shade of decadent for the holidays!
For an extra crunch and since they go well with the pomegranate seeds, I also added pine nuts. They acquire great flavor during their ride in the air fryer, so there’s no need to roast them separately.
Not a fan of either? You’ve got loads of other options:
- Walnuts
- Crispy bacon bits
- Pistachios
- Almond slivers
- Pecans
Tip: Whether you add topping before or after baking the brie depends on what you’re using. However, if possible, add them before! It allows the flavors to really seep into the cheese.
To puff or not to puff?
If you’re making air fryer baked brie for an extra hungry company, you can wrap the cheese in a layer of puff pastry dough to make it into a more substantial snack.
Don’t forget to brush some egg wash on the dough before baking it.
Air fryer baked brie presentation
For the perfect presentation, you can use a charcuterie board to serve your air fryer baked brie. Maybe with some French baguette slices, or pretzels to dip into the cheese?
For an extra fancy end result, surround the brie with a bunch of grapes and fresh apple slices. Garnish with a few sprigs of fresh rosemary and voilà! Easy holiday appetizer sorted.
